If they had just waited a year or 2 longer from their original March 2020 opening date, they could have placed it in the new TBIT Satellite Terminal that opened in 2021. And as a result, the lounge feels like they placed it in an unused supply closet in TBIT. It seems like Amex was desperate to get a lounge at LAX ASAP and took whatever space they could find pre-2020. Nicer plates/silverware and slightly better food aren't going to convince me to take the shuttle and go into the basement of TBIT, but if they want to help reduce the lines for the Sk圜lub, be my guest. I'm surprised I've encountered a few Delta flyers who opt to go to CL instead of the Sk圜lub even when their flight is out of T2/T3. I don't even think I would use it if I was flying out of T4. Yeah, the LAX Centurion Lounge is only worth it if you're already going to be flying out of TBIT. (Still grateful for the benefit, though.) Much preferred over fighting to exist in the LA AMEX lounge. I gulped down some (free) food, then nope'd outta there for the relative peace & quiet at my gate. (No matter where you try to sit, aside from the few individual chairs in the corridor, you'll be extremely close to someone else and will have to take care to avoid knocking over/into someone else's stuff.) Throw in kids/babies/strollers into the mix, and it wasn't a good time when I visited last. ![]() Combine that with people trying to sprawl out in what few chairs are there, and it's impossible to walk normally or have an isolated/peaceful experience. The LA lounge is overly cramped with hardly any space for people to store their carryons - so they block the sole narrow walkway/path to what little space is there. (Well, I can't argue that paying for food is better than getting it for free.)īUT, in terms of overall lounge (relaxation) experience - I argue it's actually more peaceful (albeit, less comfortable) if you can find an empty chair in the terminal. Did not realize I didn't note that and that must come off super snooty aboveĮven the crappiest CL with hot food and good drinks is better than paying $20 for a burger in the terminal. have a point!Įdit: I am such a pleb! If I was not confident I could profit off this card I'd cancel it and could never afford this fee just plain old up front. I see someone above saying they need to go Disney and flush out the, ahem, plebs with a higher rate- they. ![]() I can confidently/arithmetically say I profit slightly off the plat given the stuff I mentioned here hits 600+ nearly 600 already. ![]() That's before the hotel credit or a single amex offer and before I enter a single lounge. I spend 100.00% of the subscription benefit (NYT 20/month, gets me the athletic also, worth every penny), the uber benefit ( 240200*/yr, I've never had a month be slow enough that I didn't uber somewhere or order from uber eats once) I buy something on sale from Sax every 6 months (50/half year), hell I even get paramount+ by having amex pay walmart (14/month they pay them, but it's only worth 6/month to me as paramount is only 6 by itself). Fwiw it's not 700/yr or even >0/yr if you make good use of the benefits ![]() I finally break down and order some calculators. I still mostly am using my phone as a calculator, far more than is reasonable. I’m now disconnected from all of my old tools due to corporate policy. 2 I also become enamored with the ability to easily access to multiple memories.Ī few years later, I start a new job as a (mechanical) design engineer. But I start to see the usefulness of the stack and stick with it for a while, then I made the move permanent. I didn’t know what this was so I tried it out. Sometime in 2009 there was a release note for PCalc where ‘Optional HP48-style RPN behavior’ was added. I slowly start using it more and realize it’s nice not to have to fire up a program for a quick calculation. I think I read a recommendation on Daring Fireball or And now it’s all this for PCalc and I purchase it for my phone. With the arrival of smart phones, I find myself using my phone as a calculator periodically. All of my math is in python or Mathematica, or honestly, by hand. I’ve been to graduate school, never having bought another calculator, and done a post doc as well. That was all the exposure I’d had to HP calculators (and RPN) for the first 30 years of my life.įast forward to the late 2000’s. I remember one of my class mates had a weird-ass HP graphing calculator that I could never figure out how to work. I think it served primarily to hold books open to the right pages. ![]() By the time I got to college, it was mostly useless, particularly in physics courses. I went to high school in the mid ‘90’s and got a TI-81 (I think?) at some point in early high school. I’ve worked as a plasma physicist, a (mechanical) design engineer, and now as something in between 1. So first, why the heck do I even need a calculator? How does someone my age end up using a calculator when iPhones, Wolfram|Alpha, and Excel exist? And why would I spend a decent amount of cash on a physical calculator based on a 30-year old design and not buy a much cheaper and more capable modern design? Background It is more of a log of a journey than a review. This will be a long and rambling post… you have been warned. The Swiss Micros DM42 is a semi-faithful clone of the HP-42S, an RPN calculator HP sold from 1987-1995. I’ve had my Swiss Micros DM42 for about a year now and I thought I’d write some thoughts about it. We will use a USB keyboard at the initial set up stage. ![]() Regular office stapler will work as well, I had a bigger one at home.Īny decent size screws are suitable, but the shorter the better. Standard 30 cm (12”) ruler will work just fine. The total budget in my case was about €270, but it could be about €140 if you find a used monitor with a box (I just bought a brand new one). Otherwise, you can easily drop any other platform ROMs to the according folders, and they will just work (probably □ ). The FBA games typically use 2 to 4 controller buttons, sometimes 6 (works for us!). While RetroPie can emulate 50 different gaming platforms (including PlayStation, PSP, Dreamcast, Nintendo, MSX, and others), I will focus on setting up controllers and games for an emulator called Final Burn Alpha (FBA) – basically a multiple retro arcade machine emulator. ![]() I will also explain how to add a nice cardboard-compatible theme, and fetch game video previews and info. The software part will run on RetroPie, an excellent image for Raspberry Pi micro computer. I’m going to use the box that came with the monitor as a cabinet, which means the final arcade machine will be a portable bar top version. So, here is my take on how to do it just using a pencil, a ruler, and a knife. Unfortunately (or luckily?), I don’t have a circular saw at home. However, the common problem is building the wooden cabinet – well, not a problem if you have a circular saw and some other professional tools available. There is quite a number of tutorials on the Internet on how to do that. ![]() I’ve been enjoying arcades in 90s that’s why I’ve decided to put one together at home. ![]() ![]() It will tell me the position where it crashed (1037), but I'm unable to get it to pick back up at this spot (the documentation on this in the textscan help is pretty weak- why is it a string?). But we did dig up some sick day insights that can help you with your planning. It can depend on your industry, work environment, and even your sick day policies. Unfortunately, how often you can expect your employees to be calling in sick to work doesn’t have a straightforward answer. And the last-minute shift changes can be frustrating for you and your team. How often should you anticipate employees calling in sick to work?Įmployees calling in sick to work can throw a wrench into your scheduling and planning. Particularly for people who come into contact with other humans and/or food, like restaurant workers, child care staff, or cooks, it’s important to have a strong sick day policy in place so they don’t spread illness. At that point, it’s time to take a sick day. But when we get really sick, we’re usually not capable of being the best version of ourselves, much less going to work. Of course, getting sick is an unfortunate part of life. An employee calling in sick is usually a spur of the moment decision when they’re hit with an unexpected illness. But in most situations, a sick day refers to when an employee is personally too sick to come to work. The true definition of a sick day can vary from employer to employer. Sick days are different from other types of employee absences, even unapproved absences. For some employers, that’s an acceptable use of the day, but other employers may have stipulations-not always legal ones-around when and why an employee calling in sick to work can take an official sick day. ![]() In some cases, sick days are also known as personal days, where employees take time off to care for family members or handle medical appointments. We believe the “Sugartime!” episode does not come within these purposes or within the intent of Congress, and would undermine the overall objective of the Ready-To-Learn program - to produce programming that reaches as many children and families as possible. The television programs that must fulfill this mission are to be specifically designed for this purpose, with the highest attention to production quality and validity of research-based educational objectives, content, and materials.” In addition, you should also know that two years ago the Senate Appropriations Committee raised questions about the accountability of funds appropriated for Ready-To-Learn programs. 108-792 at 1236-1237 (2004)), Congress reiterated the unique mission of Ready-To-Learn, which is “to use the television medium to help prepare preschool age children for school. ![]() In the fiscal year 2005 appropriations conference report (H.
